Study Camps

Our English and Maths programmes are supported by residential Study Camps at Hobbiton Outdoor Activity Centre at nearby Hogsback.

English study camps for primary school children aim to improve their confidence and competence in speaking English. Formal teaching activities involve extensive use of games and songs, with the children’s teachers also fully involved, working alongside UK volunteer teachers and learning new teaching methodologies. The children also enjoy outdoor activities – high wire, night-time hike, barbecue and other team-building exercises organised by young volunteers from South Africa, Scandinavia, Germany and other countries.

In addition to the English study camps, we have collaborated with other local NGOs to run one-week primary maths and environment camps and two-week long school leavers’ camps for selected school leavers who are expected to do well in their Matriculation exams and go on to further/higher education or employment. These camps aim to prepare students for living independently; introduce them to common IT software and using the internet; and help them compile and format CVs.

Since the Covid pandemic it has become increasingly important to give children the opportunity to mix with others and develop social as well as academic skills, but numbers are limited by the rising cost of transport and residential accommodation. A donation of £25 would enable a child to attend a camp.
