From Local Roots to Lasting Impact
For over 20 years, Tyume Valley Schools (TVS) has worked to improve life chances through education and empowering rural communities in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.
Honouring the Legacy of Archie Sibeko
TVS, founded in 2003, was inspired by Archie, known in the UK by his ‘struggle’ name, Zola Zembe. Born in the Tyume Valley and later living in the UK, Zola dedicated his life to freedom, democracy, and education.
He was honoured with the Order of Luthuli Silver Medal by President Thabo Mbeki and an honorary doctorate from Newcastle University for his lifelong contribution to justice and equality.
What began as support for a small village school in Kwezana grew into a movement, the creation of Tyume Valley Schools, a charity that continues his vision by empowering the next generation through education.
Where We Work
Nestled in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, the Tyume Valley is home to rural communities facing significant educational challenges. Many schools lack basics like piped water, internet access, and sufficient teachers; conditions that limit opportunity and increase youth unemployment.
Since our founding, TVS has improved learning conditions for over 5,000 children, 100 teachers, and countless community volunteers, bringing hope, skills, and brighter futures to the valley.
Creating Pathways to Learning and Opportunity
Our programmes address the unique challenges faced by rural learners. From early literacy to digital learning and teacher training. Each initiative builds long-term capacity, community pride, and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
Working Together for Change
Collaboration lies at the heart of everything we do. Our work is supported by partner organisations in South Africa and the UK that share our mission for quality, inclusive education.
Our Commitment to Safety and Integrity
The wellbeing of every child and volunteer we work with is paramount. Our safeguarding policy ensures that all activities meet the highest standards of care, accountability, and protection.
